By Dave S. Clark
YegNews editor
When I first heard about YegNews, I was immediately sold on the concept — an independent online newspaper with fresh local content. A newspaper in its truest sense, other than there is no actual paper involved. When Alain Saffel told me about his concept, I couldn’t wait to get involved. That’s why I am so excited to announce today that I’m officially the new editor of YegNews.
Ever since I can remember, I always thought of myself as a writer, as it’s something I’ve always enjoyed. In 2003, I decided to make it my living when I enrolled in the journalism program at MacEwan. After I graduated in 2005, actually I think it may have been the day before I graduated, I was offered a position at the Sherwood Park News as a news reporter. After just over a year at the paper, I became the editor, where I learned a ton and gained an incredible amount of experience. I helped merge the News with Sherwood Park’s other local paper, Strathcona County This Week and I covered everything from council, crime and business to arts, sports and education.
I left the paper in the fall of 2009 for a change of pace and took up communications and media relations, which I’ve been doing on a contract basis ever since. As much as I love doing communications, which I will continue to do on a freelance basis, I never really lost the news bug. I love not knowing what news will break when I come in to the office in the morning. Every day is truly different and that’s not something you can say about most jobs. I also enjoy meeting so many great people in the community and making connections with them.
What I’m looking forward to the most is continuing to assemble a diverse cast of writers and contributors and working with that team to put out a unique product that you won’t find elsewhere in the Edmonton market. It will be great to work with our experienced writers but I’m also very excited to work with our writers who are just getting established in the media world.
I’m a very collaborative person with lots of ideas and I know Edmonton is filled with creative minds who will have many ideas for YegNews as well. Of course I’m always open to hearing from those people so please don’t hesitate to contact me at editor@yegnews.com.
Congratulations Dave!
Wow McKeen is already gone? That was a record.
